The township of Alyangula on the north western side of the island is home to approximately 800 people. Residents, the majority of whom are GEMCO employees, enjoy well maintained, cyclone-resistant houses, flats and single persons accommodation. |
| Facilities include a school, catering for primary and secondary students, community library, recreation club, sports and entertainment centre, sports oval, swimming pool, squash courts, multipurpose courts, bowling green, nine-hole golf course, health and dental care centre and parks and gardens. |
The Company operates a supermarket retailing goods at subsidised prices with general goods transported onto the island by a weekly barge service.
All Groote Eylandt residents have the services of five radio stations, four television channels and have convenient access on or off the island with light aircraft charters. |

An estimated 1200 Aboriginal people live on Groote Eylandt.
There are two main Aboriginal communities - Umbakumba, located in the northeastern area of the island, and Angurugu, adjacent to the mining operation. Several smaller communities are located on Groote Eylandt and surrounding islands. |
