Milingimbi - About the Community

Milingimbi is situated approximately 440 km east of Darwin and 206 km west of Nhulunbuy. The island is half kilometre off the mainland and forms part of the Crocodile Island group on the Northern Territory coast.

The community is serviced by the Milingimbi Community Government Council. The population is approximately 900 and consists of thirteen clan groups. The main languages are Djambarrpuyngu and Gupapuyngu.

The library is a joint use library with Milingimbi Community Education Centre. The collection consists of over 5,000 resources that meet the educational and recreational needs of the community.

The library has a large collection of Aboriginal resources and artefacts.

Milingimbi Beach - low tide

Shell fish are an important part of children's diet. They are collected at low tide and boiled up in a old powdered milk can or sugar can.
